Cancel Culture: The Modern Ochlocracy
When I hear the words ‘cancel culture’, to me it sounds like nails on a chalkboard. All I think about are the innocent lives ruined due to misconstrued opinions, and unclear or uninvestigated allegations. While there have been certain overlooked cases where cancel culture has been a positive solution, cancel culture still remains no different than all other ochlocracy, and it should have no place in a democratic society. Ochlocracies are caused when their is a breakdown in communication between the people and their government. This causes people to feel the need to collectively take matters into their own hands with no formal process. When this happens, people’s main source of action is emotion, which inevitably leads to them overlooking facts, which then deprives them the perspective needed to make a rational decision. This is the equivalency of shooting blind, and it is detrimental towards a democracy. There is a reason why we have a judicial system that has due process. Our forefathers knew that without a formal process, people are going to react to whatever emotions they are experiencing irrespective of what actually happened, and they are going to make judgements disproportionately based on their emotion.
