For this blog, I am going to make the comparison of overthinking with programming. The generally accepted phycological definition for over-thinking is “the process of constantly analyzing and anguishing over one’s thoughts. ” (Dr. Jeffrey Huttman). Overthinking is like a built in defense mechanism, and it is triggered when our subconscious notices a familiar pattern of events that have been known to cause something unpleasant. When this defense mechanism is triggered, the subconscious floods the conscious mind with warnings signs and pointers to instances that have caused distress. This is very similar to error handling in programming. Each programming language have their built in error handling, and when you write and execute code that is faulty, you will receive a pre-defined error that points the instance you executed.
